THE STRUCTURES WITHIN
An exhibition of 12 limited edition and one off digital prints

October, 1st - 31st, 2023

Opening Reception:
Saturday, October 7th, 6-9pm

Artist Statement:

In 'The Structures Within,' I embark on a playful yet menacing exploration of the interplay between the tangible world of clay and the enigmatic realm of algorithms. My journey in clay mirrors the constant shaping and reshaping of ideas, reflecting the intricate dance of algorithms that shape our lives.

This collection of 12 digital prints captures my odyssey from mid-Covid to the present, revealing a mental landscape of vulnerability during this transformative era. These images result from a unique fusion of words, phrases, sketches, and photographs, processed through AI tools—a testament to the unexpected turn of events brought about by COVID.

Through this collision of COVID-induced vulnerability and unfamiliar technological tools, I expose, deconstruct, and paradoxically celebrate the unsettling interplay between the tangible and the algorithmic, offering a glimpse into our existence within systems often beyond our control.

My creative process involves digitally manipulating existing images, treating colours, and embracing the chaos of AI algorithms. This chaotic structure mirrors the systems we rely on to organize the seemingly impossible, from hospital schedules to predictive text on phones.

Twenty years ago, with my flip phone in Japan, I witnessed algorithms that anticipated my words before they formed in my mind. This chaos isn't born of laziness but of a necessity to graphically depict the panic and lack of control. From photographs to Photoshop, AI interpolations, and back again, my thoughts evolve into a cacophony of noise and nuanced chaos—a glimpse into something within nothingness.
