STAGECRAFT

April 11 - 29, 2025
––
Closing reception - Saturday, April 26, 1-3pm

––
This exhibit explores the proscenium arch as a plane of division. It invites reflection on what is shown or hidden; the contrast between the front and the back; the constructed nature of perception; and how objects and narratives shift when viewed from different angles. The proscenium arch is the frame of a stage opening, a visual boundary between the stage and the audience, or the constructed set and received narrative. In Stagecraft, McPhee has built upon her textile installation practice with stage curtains hanging from an implied proscenium. Throughout the floor of the gallery are set pieces based on children's drawings - the artist's own and others - developing an undetermined narrative.

Set pieces will be added throughout the exhibit run, using drawings contributed during that time. Children are invited to create drawings of characters and mise-en-scène including sets, props and costume accessories. There is no specific narrative, children are welcome to include any element they like. Drawing supplies are in the gallery, and completed drawings can be left in the gallery or photos emailed to [email protected]. Please include the child's first name.
